Smartcard

Introduction

The convergence of Smart Card and Information Technology has led the market to migrate to Smart Card Solution. This has been proven with the implementation of MyKad (GPMC) by the Malaysian Government, Payment Multi-Purpose Card or BankCards by the local banks and the chip-based Credit Card or EMV Card.

With the technologies in place within the Malaysian government and spreading into the private sector, businesses that use plastic cards are exploring ways to use the smart card as part of their operations. Pursuant to this is the creation of prepaid cards used in the transportation sector such as the Touch-n-Go card, and the telephone cards as well as the access cards used for building access. As smart cards become more common, businesses and other organizations are exploring the viability of using smart card in their environment.

The Project

3F Resources Sdn Bhd and Bank Mualamat Malaysia Berhad have stepped forward and take this opportunity to develop Smartcard System for Universities across Malaysia. The Smartcard functions as the University ID card as well as the student bankcard.

Bank Muamalat provides the banking applications for the Smartcard.

3F Resources Sdn Bhd acts as the system designer and developer of this integrated smart card solution for the university's applications. 3F also designs the logical and physical design of the smart card for the applications that will be implemented.

The Smartcard

Basically there are two types of Smart Card. They are Contact and Contactless Cards. For easier expandability, combination of both would be the best option. Such a card is called a Hybrid card, as it is a hybrid of the two media, the contact chip and the contactless chip.

The Mifare standard is a chip with an antenna system that allows for contactless read and write options. The Mifare Chip can be used for storing all users information and applications depending on the need of the customers.

The contact chip is used specifically for Bank's applications only.

Implementation in IIUM - A Case Study

3F Resources Sdn Bhd along with Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad are currently implementing student smart card system in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

IIUM Smartcard implementation is among the biggest first phase implementation ever done in Malaysia. Thus, it is the best case study for any university smartcard project.

On average, IIUM has about 20,000 students for all of their campuses. The smartcard system development is divided into three phases. Among the applications involved are:

  1. Bank card as the student card
  2. Student Attendance System
    1. Student Interface
    2. Lecturer Interface
    3. Kulliyyah Administrator Interface
    4. Parents/Guardian Interface
  3. Integration with current system
    1. Student Information System
    2. Oracle 9i Database
    3. Library System
    4. Building Automation System
    5. Clinic Information System
    6. Lectures Information System
    7. Staff Information System
  4. Card ID System
    1. Card Issuance System
